Water | Water Sphere, Kingairloch

Slate sphere water sculpture by James Parker installed on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, with water flowing over hand-stacked Ballachulish slate.

This water sphere is installed at Kingairloch on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula in the Scottish Highlands.

Constructed from Ballachulish slate, the sphere is built from individually shaped pieces, layered to create a balanced and consistent form. The natural tones of the slate, with warmer rust-coloured variation from the iron pyrite within the stone, sit comfortably within the surrounding landscape.

Water flows continuously across the surface, deepening the colour of the material and revealing its structure. The water is fed from the surrounding hills into the reservoir, maintaining the level of the pond and contributing to the darker, peaty tones seen across the surface.

Works of this nature can be created in a range of sizes and adapted to suit individual locations.
