Leaf Sculpture in Mirror Polished Stainless Steel by James Parker Sculpture

One of the greatest privileges of working as a sculptor is seeing a commission become part of someone’s landscape.

Last week I installed a bespoke version of 'Leaf'  in the garden of a wonderful client on the north-west coast of England. Standing 2.75 metres high and crafted in mirror-polished stainless steel, the sculpture was created specifically for its setting, where it now provides a focal point within a beautifully designed contemporary garden.

Although this version is unique, Leaf began life as one of my limited edition bronze sculptures. Reimagining the form on a new larger scale in mirror-polished stainless steel transformed both its scale and character. The changing reflections of the surrounding landscape become part of the sculpture itself, allowing the work to respond continuously to the seasons, the weather and the movement of those experiencing it.

Despite its substantial presence, the reflective surface lends the sculpture an unexpected lightness. Trees, sky and planting are constantly drawn across its surface, softening its mass and creating a different experience from every viewpoint.

Like many of my commissions, the final sculpture evolved through close collaboration with my client. It is always rewarding when those conversations lead to a piece that feels as though it belongs naturally within its surroundings.

For those visiting the LAPADA Art & Antiques Fair in Berkeley Square, London, England,  this October, I will also be exhibiting a smaller edition of Leaf in mirror-polished stainless steel. Displaying the sculpture alongside the newly installed commission reflects the way a single idea can evolve across different scales, materials and settings while retaining its essential character.

As always, I am deeply grateful to my clients for the trust they place in my work and for the opportunity to create sculpture that becomes a lasting part of their gardens.
