Limited Edition Bronze | Bronze Cube
Cube explores balance and the quiet tension that emerges when a familiar geometric form is placed into an unfamiliar position. Balanced precisely on one corner, the cube is shifted from something static into something subtly dynamic. While the form itself rests on the diagonal, the layered strata of the original slate remain horizontal, running across the body of the cube and creating a measured counterpoint between stability and displacement.
The work began as a stacked slate original. I shaped individual pieces of slate carefully and layered them to construct the cube in stone; a process that allowed subtle irregularities to remain present within an otherwise exact geometry. That original was then translated into bronze using the lost-wax casting process, capturing every nuance of the slate surface and preserving it in a material chosen for its permanence. The geometry remains precise, but the surface resists perfection, retaining the memory of its material origin.
The conceptual spark for Cube came while working with slate from the western islands of Scotland, where iron pyrite often appears as naturally occurring inclusions within the stone. These perfectly formed cubic crystals, sometimes sitting at a jaunty angle, are endlessly intriguing. Known colloquially as “fool’s gold,” pyrite catches and reflects the light, offering moments of brilliance embedded within a darker, more restrained material. Using slate as the starting point for Cube felt like a natural homage to these hidden geometries, reconstructing in sculptural form the very shape found within the stone itself.
The sculpture is fixed to a circular bronze mounting plate, providing stability while maintaining a light visual footprint. In one setting Cube is shown mounted on a sandstone plinth within a garden context. In another it is placed on a coffee table in a private home in Atlanta, Georgia. These differing settings demonstrate the sculpture’s versatility; equally at ease indoors or out, and how the same work can be experienced very differently depending on its surroundings.
Shown here at approximately 34 centimetres in height, Cube is available as a limited edition bronze of 25. Each piece is signed, dated and individually numbered and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.Â
While this edition exists at a restrained scale, the idea itself remains open-ended. The form can be realised at much larger dimensions, in bronze, in slate or in stainless steel, and will continue to evolve as I explore new sculptural outcomes. Alongside this, the work develops through an expanding range of modelling approaches, including clay, plaster, slate, wood and other hand-worked materials that allow ideas to be tested, refined and ultimately translated into bronze.
