Stainless Steel | Leaf

Leaf in mirror polished stainless steel evolves from the same abstract natural form first realised in bronze, yet in this material it seemingly takes on a more architectural presence. Rising from a precise triangular base and tapering to a sharp vertex, the sculpture acts like a contemporary obelisk; a vertical marker that draws the eye upward and anchors space.

The form suggests both organic growth and geometric control. While inspired by the structure of a leaf, it is not a botanical illustration. It is an abstracted essence; growth reduced to line and balance. The upward thrust of the vertex reinforces this gesture, directing attention toward sky and light.

Fabricated through a cold-forging process, the stainless steel is shaped over the original pattern before being welded and polished by hand. This method reduces porosity and allows the surface to achieve a flawless mirror finish. The result is seamless and exacting, capable of reflecting its environment with exceptional clarity.

In stainless steel, the sculpture becomes both object and atmosphere. Sky, architecture and planting move across its surface in continuous distortion. In contemporary architectural settings it stands as a vertical counterpoint to strong lines.

It can be seen here on my RHS Chelsea Flower Show award winning trade stand pictured in 2023. This piece was sent to a client in the United Arab Emirates. We respect the privacy of all of our clients and have therefore shared a visual render of the sculpture in an imagined setting of a modern landscape, rather than the actual location.

At smaller scales, Leaf operates as a precise reflective presence. At monumental scale, it functions as a commanding centrepiece; an obelisk-like focal point within gardens, courtyards and contemporary landscapes. Its strength lies in both clarity and interaction; a sculpture that asserts form while absorbing its surroundings.
