Apple has become one of my most sought-after sculptural forms. Its apparent simplicity is deceptive. Familiar and immediately recognisable, the apple carries layers of meaning that resonate across cultures and generations, allowing it to feel both timeless and deeply personal.
The apple has long been associated with knowledge and discovery, most famously through Isaac Newton, as well as temptation and the idea of the forbidden fruit. For me, however, the connection is more grounded in memory and form. Childhood memories of climbing apple trees and collecting fruit have stayed with me and I am always conscious of that sense of familiarity when shaping these works by hand. I tend to aim for a softly heart-shaped apple, a form that feels generous, balanced, and resolved, with gentle transitions rather than sharp definition.
Each bronze Apple begins as a clay original. Working in clay allows me to manipulate the form freely and intuitively until the overall proportions feel settled. From this, a plaster negative is taken, which is then used to create a hard plaster positive. This more resistant material allows me to work with greater precision, gradually refining the surface and removing material to achieve an almost glass-like finish.
The refined plaster form is then moulded and cast in bronze. Smaller Apples are produced using the lost-wax process, while larger works are sand cast in order to preserve the accuracy of the form at scale. Patination is applied by hand, with finishes ranging through blue-green and verdigris tones, each giving the sculpture its own depth and character.
Bronze Apples are available across a wide range of sizes, from small pieces that fit comfortably in the palm of the hand, through to works suited to a sideboard or table, then on to larger sculptures intended for garden plinths, standalone landscape pieces, and onward to monumental works. Across all scales, each sculpture is signed, dated, and individually numbered, and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
The Apple form has also been realised in other materials, including mirror-polished stainless steel and stacked slate. Each material brings its own character and presence to the same underlying form — from the reflective, environment-absorbing quality of polished steel to the layered, geological language of slate — allowing the sculpture to respond differently to interior, garden, and landscape settings.
These works are shown in a variety of contexts: in gallery settings on white plinths, within gardens on sandstone bases or rugged whinstone boulders, and at larger scales within expansive landscapes. Even at monumental proportions, the Apple is intended to feel settled and dignified rather than ostentatious — commanding space quietly, without overpowering its surroundings.
