Slate | Pear
Pear is a sculpture that explores balance, proportion and the quiet generosity of familiar natural forms. Proportion is everything to me; how one curve leads into the next, with soft transitions that allow the form to read as a continuous whole. I believe this is what gives the work its bold, comforting presence.
Each sculpture is constructed by shaping and stacking in excess of a thousand individual pieces of slate, creating a surface with a fabric-like character. The examples shown here are formed from Vermont Green slate, prized for its subtle hue, though pears can be made in other slates as part of a bespoke commission. The stem offers a counterpoint: a smooth bronze element, cast by the lost-wax process from a carefully selected piece of fallen wood, which I have shaped by hand.
The base is integral to how the sculpture sits in its landscape. As seen here, one pear rests on a naturally edged sandstone base suited to an informal setting, while others stand on precisely cut square bases in sandstone or slate, chosen in consultation with the client. Pears are sometimes commissioned alongside my Apple sculptures, where the pairing creates a strong dialogue across a lawn or vista.
The works shown here range between five and six feet in height, though Pear can be created at smaller or larger scales. These sculptures have been commissioned internationally; from Scotland, England, the Channel Islands and Ireland, to Portugal, Germany, the United States and Canada.
While the pieces are substantial, we’re highly experienced in shipping and installation and I regularly travel to site to oversee placement and ensure everything sits exactly as intended.
