Slate | Geometry of Plants

Geometry of Plants green slate sculpture by James Parker, inspired by lotus form and positioned within a garden water rill.

Geometry of Plants (Study) is an experimental sculptural work exploring the underlying geometry found in botanical forms. Created using Lakeland Green slate sourced from the Lake District in north west England, the piece references the radial structure and layered growth of plant life, drawing loosely on the form of a lotus.

The individual slate elements have been honed to achieve a smooth, refined surface, while their edges retain the textured marks of hand shaping with a hammer. This contrast allows the hard, sedimentary stone to read as both precise and organic, combining sharp geometry with a softness more commonly associated with living forms.

The sculpture emerged as a direct response to a year at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, where we were kindly given an exceptional succulent plant by a gold medal winner to display alongside and complement some of our sculptural work. On returning to the studio, this piece was made instinctively, with minimal planning, as a way of exploring those influences through material and process. It remains a study, one that may be revisited or developed further, and forms like this may be commissioned at different scales or levels of refinement.
