Water | The Sun

The Sun, a slate sphere water sculpture by James Parker, installed in the walled garden at Cawdor Castle with water flowing over reclaimed stone.

The Sun was commissioned by the Dowager Countess of Cawdor and installed in the walled garden at Cawdor Castle in 2008.

The sculpture is formed from slate reclaimed during the castle’s roof renovation, bringing together a wide range of colours and tones gathered over centuries. Each piece was shaped and laid by hand to build the spherical form, allowing the natural variation within the material to remain visible.

Water is recirculated from a lead reservoir beneath the sculpture and flows continuously over the surface, deepening the colour of the slate and introducing movement and sound. The piece stands at approximately 6 ft 9 in (just over 2 metres), giving it a clear presence within the garden.

Works of this nature can be created to different scales and adapted to suit individual settings.

These works are part of a wider body of slate sculpture and can be developed as bespoke sculptures, with full delivery and installation where required.
