Glass | Creation

Creation in glass explores ideas of fragility, precision and potential. The egg form, associated with beginnings, with what is held, protected and yet to emerge, feels particularly resonant in this material. In glass, that symbolism is heightened. The material carries a sense of delicacy, yet allows for extraordinary control, enabling me to work with clarity and with a careful consideration of light in a way that no other medium quite offers.

This sculpture was commissioned for a private garden in St Andrews, Scotland. Only a short distance from the energy and movement of the town shaped by its university, its history and the presence of the Old Course, the garden offers a rare sense of calm. Enclosed by thoughtful planting and centred on open lawn, it becomes an oasis in which the sculpture can be encountered quietly and at close quarters.

The sculpture itself is constructed from approximately sixty layers of stacked glass. When mounted on its plinth, the form is elevated to eye level, allowing it to be read clearly from all sides. During the day the glass takes on a rich teal tone, shifting constantly as the light changes. When sunlight strikes the exposed ends of the glass, fine darts of light are drawn inward, subtly animating the form and leading the eye toward its centre.

As evening falls, the sculpture takes on a different presence. A concealed light set discreetly within the stainless steel capped, reclaimed oak plinth, illuminates the glass from within. The form begins to glow gently, transforming the work into a focal point that continues to resonate long after daylight fades. This interplay between natural and artificial light was an integral part of the commission, allowing the sculpture to evolve across the day and into the night.

Working in glass opens another dimension within my work; one rooted in precision, restraint, and response to place. Each piece is bespoke, shaped not only by material and form, but by setting, light and the way the sculpture is lived with over time.
