Bronze Shell Sculpture Installed in North Wales
This four foot edition of Shell has recently been installed in North Wales, positioned against a remarkable backdrop of sea and mountains.
The sculpture forms part of a limited edition of ten pieces worldwide and is inspired by the whelk shells I collected as a child on the west coast of Scotland. Between tides, I would gather shells along the shoreline and fill hessian sacks which were later sold to local fishermen for export to the continent. It was cold work, but the experience left a lasting fascination with the extraordinary geometry found within these natural forms.
The perfect logarithmic spirals of the whelk shell continue to inspire my work today. In Shell , unnecessary detail has been removed to leave behind a distilled sculptural form that captures the essence and movement of the original object.
Cast in bronze and finished with a rich patina, the sculpture sits on a substantial granite plinth cut from a glacial boulder weighing approximately one and a half tonnes.
The relationship between sculpture, base and landscape is always an important consideration, particularly in exposed locations such as this where the surrounding environment becomes part of the experience of the piece itself.
Each sculpture in the edition is signed, dated and numbered and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
